How to Rig a Mainsail

By preparing your mainsail before leaving the dock you save time and maintain crew safety.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Remove the sail cover.

  2. Step 2

    Release the halyard from its cleat.

  3. Step 3

    Attach the halyard to the headboard.

  4. Step 4

    Secure the headboard end of the halyard by leading it down from the headboard to a winch or cleat on or near the mast. This will ensure it doesn't wrap around the mast or shrouds.

  5. Step 5

    Pull the slack out of the other end of the halyard and tie it off to a cleat. The sail is now ready to be raised.
