Clipping files are another part of the Mac OS drag-and-drop feature (OS 7.5 or later). Just select something and drag it onto the desktop: it makes itself into a file!

From Quick Guide: The Power of Mac OS
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac OS 9.0
  1. Step 1

Select the text or graphic you want to clip.

  2. Step 2

Drag the selected item out of the application window and onto the desktop. It will automatically form itself into a clipping icon and name itself.

  3. Step 3

Retrieve your clip by dragging it back into the application window or by double-clicking on the icon and copying it into a new application.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clipping file creation works in many applications, including AppleWorks (ClarisWorks), Microsoft Word (version 6 or later), WordPerfect, SimpleText (which comes installed on your Mac), AOL, FileMaker, and NisusWriter.
  • The Clipping extension must be on for this to work. If you try to make a clipping from one of the supported programs and it doesn't work, open the Extensions Manager control panel and make sure that the Clipping extension is checked. If it's not, check it and restart the computer.
