How to Copy and Paste With Drag and Drop on a Mac

Who has time to copy and paste? In many applications you can drag and drop text and graphics.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• AppleWorks
• Mac OS 9.0
• Microsoft Word (for Mac)
• NisusWriter
• WordPerfect For Mac

1. Highlight the text or graphic you want to move.

2. Hold down your pointer anywhere within the highlighted area.

3. Drag the text or graphic to where you want it to be. A vertical cursor shows you where the text will be placed when you release it.

4. Release the mouse button. The text or graphic will be dropped where you placed it.

Tips & Warnings

• The drag-and-drop feature works in many applications, including AppleWorks (ClarisWorks), Microsoft Word (version 6 or later), WordPerfect, SimpleText (which comes installed on your Mac), AOL, FileMaker, and NisusWriter.
• If you use drag and drop to rearrange items in a list, remember to include a Return character at the end of the selected text.
• The Clipping extension must be turned on for drag and drop to work. If you can't use drag and drop in one of the indicated programs, open the Extensions Manager control panel and make sure that the Clipping extension is checked. If it's not, check it and restart the computer.
