How to Oversee a Mover's Work When Loading

It can be a real luxury to let other people move your belongings - or it can be a nerve-wracking experience. Here's how to oversee the work that's being done so you can have peace of mind.

1. Make a confirmation call to your mover the day before moving day.
2. Remove as many distractions (such as pets, children, other appointments) as possible.
3. Mark clearly anything that isn't going to be moved, and separate it from those things that are. (Moving companies will move anything; even trash!)
4. Stay with the driver as your possessions are inventoried; make notes on the inventory about the condition of your items.
5. Read the bill of lading carefully before you sign - this is your contract.
6. Stand back and let the workers do their job; they have the tools and the know-how to do it quickly and efficiently.
7. Confirm the date and time of delivery with the driver.
8. Check that the driver has correct directions and a telephone number to contact either you or a friend if you're on the road.
9. Take a final walk through the house before the truck leaves to be sure everything is loaded in the truck.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep your copy of the bill of lading with your other valuable papers until your possessions are delivered and the bill is paid.
• Keep valuable items such as jewelry, stock certificates, legal documents, credit cards, checkbooks and your wallet with you at all times.
• Make sure the movers don't load things that you might need before you leave, such as cleaning supplies, toys for the kids or pet food.
