Hiking and backpacking can be murder on your knees, ankles and feet. Take a load off with trekking poles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Waterproof Hiking Boots
  • Snowshoes
  • Telemark Skis
  • Trekking Poles
  1. Step 1

Decide whether or not you want poles with shock-absorption capability. Shock-absorbing poles are more expensive but easier on the wrists.

  2. Step 2

Look for poles that are adjustable. Pole length should adjust easily so that you can shorten or lengthen the pole according to the terrain and so that people of different heights can use them.

  3. Step 3

Check whether the poles come with snow baskets. If not, you won't be able to use them for snowshoeing or telemark skiing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Poles can be expensive, but it's well worth the price to spare your ankles and knees.
  • Use your poles to help you ford streams and rivers you never would have dreamed of crossing before.
