Things You'll Need:
- Waterproof Matches
- Camp-stove Fuels
- Camping Cookwares
- Camping Stoves
-
Step 1
Decide how much money you're willing to spend. Stoves range from simple one-burners for $20 to full, stand-up stoves for $200.
-
Step 2
Find a stove with at least two burners. You'll often want to be heating or cooking two things at once.
-
Step 3
Look for stoves that are light (many are made of aluminum), and those that are easy to set up and clean.
-
Step 4
See what kind of fuel the stove uses. White gas is the most widely available and is quite cheap. It also burns relatively cleanly. Propane is another popular option, but often requires discarding empty canisters creating unnecessary waste.
-
Step 5
Make sure the stove will work at high altitudes, so you don't end up eating raw macaroni.
-
Step 6
Check what form the fuel supply comes in. If possible, buy a stove with a reusable fuel tank or canister.

on 12/4/2008 A gas stove burns much hotter and is well worth the investment, versus a propane stove. For backpacking, you can also get a very light weight alcohol stove.

on 10/12/2008 As a lifelong camper, I agree with the original article, a two burner camping stove is a must have, even if it's only two people camping, unless you're hiking or backpacking into the woods. Two burners are better for everything when cooking outdoors, from making breakfast to making dinner, and everything in between.

on 11/22/2005 There's no reason to get a two burner stove if it's just two people camping. With one burner, just boil water and make pasta, for example, then warm up the sauce in the same bowl. Two burners are better if you want to time things perfectly.
