Here's how to scout out a safe course before entering the rapids.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • River Raft First Aid Kits
  • Life Vests
  • River Raft Oars
  • River Raft Paddles
  • River Raft Repair Kits
  • River Rafts
  1. Step 1

Beach your raft well upstream of the rapids and walk down to study them. Try to find a point of high perspective to view the rapids.

  2. Step 2

Look carefully over the entire length of rapids for rocks that cannot be seen from upstream and rocks that are just below the surface of the water.

  3. Step 3

Note the tongue of the rapid, which is usually a V-shaped indentation where the rapid runs deepest and swiftest. This is usually the best point of entry.

  4. Step 4

Figure out the direction of the main current running through each section of the rapids. This should generally be your course.

  5. Step 5

Note and remember the main hazards along your course.

  6. Step 6

Consider the consequences of any mistakes along your chosen route and what you would do in the event of such a mistake.

  7. Step 7

Consider and plan an alternative route in the event of a navigational error.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always chose the safest course through the rapids.
  • If entered properly at the V-shaped tongue, many rapids require very little maneuvering.
  • Always wear a life vest when rafting.
  • Scout every rapid before entering.
  • River rafting is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
