You'll need more than just a canoe before you can go canoeing. Make sure you have all the gear you need before you set out.

From Quick Guide: Canoe Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4-inch Nylon Ropes
  • Duct Tape
  • Waterproof Contact Cement
  • Snacks
  • Canoe Gear Bags
  • Canoe Kneeling Pads
  • Canoe Paddles
  • Canoe Racks
  • Canoe Yokes
  • Canoes
  • Life Vests
  • Duct Tape
  • Snacks
  1. Step 1

Choose a paddle that fits your upper body size, not your height. Sit in your canoe and test the paddle by holding as if you're about to begin paddling. The shaft of the paddle should be roughly the distance from your nose to the water. The blade should be 20 to 25 inches long.

  2. Step 2

Get enough life vests for your canoe. The jacket should not be able to ride up over your ears and should zip or clip properly and snugly in front.

  3. Step 3

Bring a roll of duct tape on every canoe trip. The thousands of uses for it will reveal themselves as you go.

  4. Step 4

Carry 100 feet of 1/4-inch nylon rope with you. Cut the rope as needed.

  5. Step 5

Get waterproof gear bags to carry your supplies. Find a way to secure them to the canoe in case of a capsize.

  6. Step 6

Make sure your canoe has a sturdy yoke with proper padding for portages and for just getting the canoe from your car to the water.

  7. Step 7

Buy some kneeling pads if you're a serious paddler; otherwise, figure out some foam or towel system to pad your seat or kneeling posture. You might want to glue the pads to the hull with some waterproof contact cement.

  8. Step 8

Make a checklist and check off every item before each trip. Don't forget the little things, like sunscreen, a hat, snacks, and so on.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're going to be doing mostly flat, calm water canoeing, consider getting a bent paddle for more efficiency. However, don't use a bent shaft in white water.
  • Don't pack items you don't need. Extra weight slows your canoe down, and space is always limited.
  • Always wear a life vest when canoeing.
  • Canoeing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
