How to Create Miscellaneous Accented Characters on a Mac

Half of the Mac's character set can't be found on the keyboard. Here's how to create miscellaneous accented characters and punctuation used in many Latin-based languages.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fontographer (Macromedia)
  • PopChar Pro (Uni Software Plus)
  • Computer Fonts Software

Accented Characters

Step1
For å, press Option + a (for upper case: Option + Shift + a).
Step2
For æ, press Option + " (for upper case: Option + Shift + ") - but make sure "smart quotes" is turned off!
Step3
For ç, press Option + c (for upper case: Option + Shift + c).
Step4
For ? (dotless i), press Option + Shift + b.
Step5
For ', press Option + q (for upper case: Option + Shift + q).
Step6
For ø, press Option + o (for upper case: Option + Shift + o).
Step7
For ß, press Option + s

Punctuation

Step1
For « (French double open-quote), press Option + \ (backslash).
Step2
For » (French double close-quote), press Option + Shift + \ (backslash).
Step3
For ', press Option + Shift + /.
Step4
For ¡, press Option + 1 (number 1).
Step5
For ' (French single open-quote), press Option + Shift + 3.
Step6
For ' (French single close-quote), press Option + Shift + 4.
Step7
For ' (low single close-quote), press Option + Shift + 0 (zero).
Step8
For ' (low double close-quote), press Option + Shift + w.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many of these accented ("high ASCII") characters are not compatible with e-mail.
