How to Add an Item to the Mac Launcher

The Mac Launcher is a one-click wonder. Add an application or file icon to the Launcher's folder or window, and it's just a click away. Think of the time you'll save! The Launcher is available on Macs with system software version 7.5 and later.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Macintosh Computers
  • Mac OS 9.0
  1. Step 1

    From the Finder, double-click to open the System Folder.

  2. Step 2

    Locate the Launcher Items folder and double-click to open it.

  3. Step 3

    Make an alias of the application or document you want displayed in the Launcher (select the file's icon and press Command-M), and place the alias in the Launcher Items folder.

Tips & Warnings
  • Alternatively, drag the icon of the file or application into the open Launcher window and an alias is made for you.
  • To make a Launcher item (button) go away, Option-drag the icon to the Trash.

on 8/28/2007 This ancient history. I would imagine most Mac Users are on OS X now, so the process is slightly different and even easier.

You know the Dock? Well that's your launcher. To put something onto the Dock simply drag the item to the Dock and it will automatically add it and one click will launch it from the Dock. You can also place folders in the Dock; if you click on a Folder icon and hold, it will bring up a list of the contents of that folder and you can then select the item/application/file you want.
