The movement of the checkers can be somewhat confusing in the beginning. Just remember that each player moves in the opposite direction from his or her opponent.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set up the board (see "Set Up a Backgammon Board," under Related eHows).

  2. Step 2

Play in a "C" direction, counterclockwise, starting from the upper right corner opposing you, going to the right corner closest to you.

  3. Step 3

Roll the dice to determine how many points to move.

  4. Step 4

Move onto open points only. Move checkers separately or in pairs.

  5. Step 5

Move all the pips shown on the dice. Play the larger number or as many doubles as you can if you can move only some of the pips rolled.

  6. Step 6

Place your opponent's checker on the bar when you hit a blot.

  7. Step 7

Roll to get your own checker back in play if you have been hit and placed on the bar.

  8. Step 8

Return that checker to the beginning of the game - your opponent's home board.

  9. Step 9

Bear off when you have moved all of your checkers onto your home board quadrant.
