Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Motorcycle covers
- Motorcycle gloves
- Traffic rule books
- Motorcycle insurance
- Motorcycle pants
- Motorcycles
Step1
Ask the agent or broker who currently insures your auto or home about motorcycle insurance. In some states, such as California, you must have insurance before you can pick up your new bike at the dealership.
Step2
If your insurance company does not cover motorcycles, consult friends or neighbors who have coverage for their motorcycles for good agencies to contact.
Step3
Talk to the cyclist or salesperson who sold you the motorcycle, and also look through motorcycle magazines, motorcycle Web sites and the yellow pages. Dealerships don't always work with the best companies, and you might get talked into a policy you don't want.
Step4
Note that your premium rate is based upon factors such as the size, type and brand of bike, as well as your age, your driving record, your years of driving experience, your garaging location and the amount of miles you're likely to drive in a week. Premium rates vary greatly from biker to biker.

on 6/5/2008 Get multiple quotes. I found a wide range of pricing for my 1994 Yamaha Virago.

on 8/8/2006 Be sure to use a company that will also insure your helmet and clothes! The good stuff isn't cheap and wearing it protects the insurance company just as much as it protects you. Choose a company that rewards you by insuring your gear.

on 11/22/2005 Any time you go down with your motorcycle, you are supposed to trash your helmet or send it back to the manufacturer to have it inspected.
