Follow these tips when programming a RCA Universal remote control

It takes just a few steps to program an RCA Universal Remote Control using the Automatic Code Search method. While there may be some trial and error, the pleasure of getting rid of several extra remote controls will far outweigh the hassle in getting it programmed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • RCA Universal Remote Control
  1. Step 1

Turn on the component you want to program.

  2. Step 2

Press and release the component button on your remote that corresponds to the component you want the remote to operate (TV, VCR, etc.). The illuminated ON-OFF button will turn on and remain on.

  3. Step 3

Press both the component and the ON-OFF buttons. The illuminated ON-OFF button will turn off, and then will come back on.

  4. Step 4

Release both buttons after the ON-OFF button turns back on. The button should remain illuminated.

  5. Step 5

Press and release the PLAY button. If the component does not respond after five seconds, continue to press the PLAY button every five seconds until the component turns off.

  6. Step 6

Press and release the REVERSE button when the component turns off, then wait to see if the component turns on again.

  7. Step 7

Press and release the STOP button to save the new code.

Tips & Warnings
  • Each time you press the PLAY button in Step 5, the ON-OFF button blinks ten times and a list of 10 codes is sent to your component. This process continues until all of the code lists have been searched. If the component has not turned off after all codes have been searched, the ON-OFF button blinks four times, turns off, and the Auto Code Search is exited.
  • If you do not press the STOP button at the end, the new code will not be saved.

on 1/6/2010 I agree with alang36.
It was the reverse part that seemed to stall the whole process. Just a little bit of prayer and a patient finger to keep pressing the reverse button and the TV came on. Horray! :)

on 12/20/2009 worked fine for me 2nd time. I had to hit the reverse slowly, as I think I went past the first time. Thanks!

on 11/25/2009 These directions did work, but it took some improvisation. I honestly don't know quite how I did it. It didn't work exactly like the directions said.

For instance, whenever I pressed the "TV button" the on/off light never stayed on. But then I would press the TV with on/off, and the button did stay on. This seemed different from the instructions.

Then I kept pressing "Play" so that the red light would blink and codes would be tried. I agreed that I had to try that about eight times and then it would work.

I pressed Reverse and most of the time it didn't work. I kept pressing reverse and I think it finally worked. Then I pressed Stop to save it.

I think that is how I did it, but it truly took some guesswork.

Believe me, if I can do it, you can do it.

It took a little bit of prayer, too.
