How to Assume a Ready Stance in Judo

Assume the ready stance before performing a form or prior to taking the fighting stance when sparring.

  1. Step 1

    Face forward and bend your knees slightly.

  2. Step 2

    Keep your head erect and bend your torso slightly forward.

  3. Step 3

    Place your feet less than shoulder-width apart.

  4. Step 4

    Turn your feet out at a 45-degree angle, keeping your heels even.

  5. Step 5

    Hold your arms relaxed at your sides with your hands in a fist or open and relaxed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Right natural posture (migi-shizentai) and left natural posture (hidari-shizentai) are slight variations of the judo ready stance.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Consult your physician for advice on whether or not you should pursue this activity.
