How to Assume a Back Stance in Wushu

A wushu (kung fu) back stance, also called an empty stance, is a very strong defensive stance. If positioned correctly, you can easily lift your front leg and foot to block or strike.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Face forward. Point your forward foot slightly off to the side.

  2. Step 2

    Point the other foot 45 degrees to the side.

  3. Step 3

    Keep the toes of the forward foot a pace or more in front of the rear foot.

  4. Step 4

    Distribute your weight with 70 percent on the back leg.

  5. Step 5

    Press both knees outward.

  6. Step 6

    Turn your body to the side.

  7. Step 7

    Align your feet in an imaginary straight line from the forward toes to the rear heel in the direction of the stance.

  8. Step 8

    Hold your forward arm at a 45-degree angle. Keep your fingers together with your hand open in front of your stomach.

  9. Step 9

    Hold your other arm at a 90-degree angle. Keep your fingers together with your hand open in front of your chest.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have enough weight on your rear leg, you'll be able to lift your front leg without shifting your weight.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Consult your physician for advice on whether or not you should participate in this activity.
