How to Assume a Fighting Stance in Tae Kwon Do

The fighting stance is a strong sparring position - you can attack or defend with either hand or foot.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Direct your upper body and head forward, with just your hips facing the side.

  2. Step 2

    Turn both feet 45 degrees to the right to gain stability.

  3. Step 3

    Step back with your right foot a pace or two.

  4. Step 4

    Keep your feet shoulder-width apart with your weight equally distributed.

  5. Step 5

    Stand slightly sideways to your opponent to make less of your body a target.

  6. Step 6

    Hold your chin down and your elbows close to your body with your fists up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay on the balls of your feet to use either foot as a weapon.
  • Your arms, if positioned correctly, will be held in front of your body in a guarded position, ready to block or strike as needed.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Consult your physician for advice on whether or not you should pursue this activity.
