How to Buy Books for Martial Arts Training

Knowing your martial arts goals will help you choose the training guide that's right for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Encyclopedias
  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Assess your martial arts training needs. Are you a beginner, or are you preparing for your temporary black-belt promotion test? Do you need an overview of your martial arts style, or do you need to delve into subtle variations of a black-belt striking technique?

  2. Step 2

Check with your school and your school's instructors to determine which books might be helpful to your development as a martial arts practitioner.

  3. Step 3

Be sure technical books are consistent with style variations. For example, techniques will vary among the 400 styles of wushu (kung fu).

  4. Step 4

Decide what book you'll buy before you settle down with a cappuccino at your favorite bookseller. If you know you need a specific text on tae kwon do hyungs (forms), you'll be less likely to fall for "101 Death Grips" at the bargain counter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask black belts to name the single most influential martial arts book in their collection. Have them describe to you what they look for in a quality publication.
