There are many forms of sparring in the martial arts, but essential to all is the need for protective padding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Check with your school about what to order. Most schools offer sparring kits, complete with carrying bag. They can also help you with sizes and the proper fit.

  2. Step 2

Consider your training needs. Leather sparring shoes are durable and comfortable, but tend to slip more than foam-dipped foot pads.

  3. Step 3

Weigh price and value. Cloth gear is less expensive and offers a more secure fit than foam-dipped gear, but it offers less protection against impact.

  4. Step 4

Determine a level of safety you can live with. Headgear with a face cage or guard may eliminate the potential of serious injury, but may also restrict your vision.

  5. Step 5

Choose a mouthpiece that protects, but allows adequate airflow. A single mouthpiece is inexpensive and doesn't restrict breathing, but offers less protection against jaw shocks than a double mouthpiece.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask a dentist about your mouthpiece. For a fee, some dentists will make a mold of your teeth for a perfect mouthpiece fit.
  • The martial arts are physically demanding. Consult your physician for advice on whether or not you should participate in this activity.
  • Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
