Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose shoes used by athletes, not just those that look good. Check for features you need, such as motion control and cushioning.

  2. Step 2

Go for a running jacket (lightweight polyester, or Polar Fleece for very cold conditions) and various pairs of running tights with different thicknesses.

  3. Step 3

Look for clothing made with performance fabrics (Supplex, Lycra, Coolmax, Polar Fleece).

  4. Step 4

Buy running shorts with ample splits on the sides to allow for a full stride, or specific bicycle-style shorts made for running.

  5. Step 5

Check out special socks made with performance material: Thermax for winter, Coolmax for summer.

  6. Step 6

Remember hats and gloves. The majority of the body's heat loss is through the head. Headbands, ski hats and gloves are also made from performance fabrics.

  7. Step 7

Look for extras, such as reflective materials for running in the dark.
