How to Be a Smart Shopper for Running Shoes

Running shoes are the most essential gear you can buy for the activity. They're also a significant investment, so it pays to shop for them wisely.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Stick with the shoe that works. There is no one type that works for everyone, but when you find yours, stay with it.

  2. Step 2

Try on shoes with the socks you wear while running. A training shoe should be long enough to fit a thumb-width at the toe end while wearing socks.

  3. Step 3

Shop later in the day. Feet tend to be larger then.

  4. Step 4

Buy women's models if you're a woman. Women's shoes are made lighter and narrower than men's. But if you're a woman with a wider or larger foot, don't hesitate to wear men's shoes.

  5. Step 5

Buy two pairs of shoes if you run often so one pair is always dry and clean. However, it's not a good idea to buy two pairs of a new model at once.

  6. Step 6

Buy a separate pair of racing shoes, which are lighter, if you wish. But today's lightweight trainers serve both purposes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring in your old running shoes when shopping for new ones. Knowledgeable salespeople know how to evaluate your needs by looking at your worn shoes.
  • Try an old shoe with a new one, and try two different models for comparison.
  • Take a run in the shoes, or at least try them on a hard surface, not a rug.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
