Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Barbie Accessories
  • Barbie Furniture
  • Barbie Dolls
  • Barbie Bazaar Subscriptions
  • Magic Fairy Tales: BarbieĀ® as Rapunzel
  • Detective Barbie Software
  • Barbie Riding Club Software
  • Barbie Super Sports Software
  • Barbie Clothes
  • Barbie Jewelry
  1. Step 1

Talk to your child about what she wants to be when she grows up, what kinds of sports and hobbies sound exciting to her and what kinds of clothes she thinks are amazing. Ask what kinds of things she likes to imagine doing.

  2. Step 2

Think about other interests your child may have expressed recently. For example, if she saw a TV show about scuba diving and was excited by it, keep this in mind.

  3. Step 3

Remember any story or movie characters that enchanted your child. Many of these characters can be found as Barbies.

  4. Step 4

Make a list of all of these interests. The list may include things like dogs, dancing, teachers, cooking, puffy ball gowns and acid-dyed jeans.

  5. Step 5

Consider what types of Barbies or Barbie accessories might match these dreams.

  6. Step 6

Go to a store or online and look at the wide assortment of items available.

  7. Step 7

Be creative. If your child dreams of traveling the world, buy Pilot Barbie or Barbies representing foreign countries. Buy the Barbie airplane and a Barbie suitcase. If your child dreams of being a chef, buy a Barbie kitchen, kitchen accessories and a Barbie apron.

  8. Step 8

Look in magazines and books for Barbies that are no longer made that fit your child's dreams. Purchase these from collectors or Barbie conventions.

  9. Step 9

Consider buying packaged sets that fulfill your child's fantasy, such as a wedding party or horse stable set.

  10. Step 10

Remember that companies other than Mattel make fashion dolls that are the same size as Barbie. If your child dreams of being a Spice Girl, you will need to look outside the Barbie line to find a Spice Girl fashion doll.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't worry if you can't find an exact match for your child's unique dream of raising chickens or working at a carnival. If your child likes Barbie, she will come to love any doll you buy for her and may become interested in something just because she has that type of Barbie.
  • You may wish to buy Barbies that share characteristics with your child. Many girls feel validated by Barbies that share their skin color. Becky (Wheelchair Barbie) is also available.
