How to Treat an Infected Eye in the Wilderness

Eye infections are possible if the terrain you are frolicking in has lots of wind, flying dust and debris. To be on the safe side, consult a doctor about carrying antibiotic eye ointment in your first aid kit if you are trekking in an arrid, dusty and windy climate.

Things You'll Need:

  • Evacuation Plan
  • Wilderness First Aid Classes
  • Water Filters
  • Evacuation Insurance
  • Prescription Antibiotic Ointment
  1. Step 1

    Evaluate for the signs and symptoms of an eye infection: swelling, redness, itchiness or discharge.

  2. Step 2

    Flush the eye liberally with disinfected water several times a day.

  3. Step 3

    Apply a prescribed antibiotic eye ointment in the eye - follow the instructions on the prescription label.

  4. Step 4

    Evacuate immediately if the symptoms persist. Antibiotic therapy may be necessary.

Get 1/2 cup of water and five or more petals from a red rose. Heat the water and petals in a sauce pan until it boils. Remove it from the heat and steep for 2 to 3 minutes. Saturate 1 or 2 cotton balls with the solution, cleaning the debris and mucus from the eyelashes and lids. Saturate another 1 or 2 cottonballs, place a drop or two in the eye, and cover the closed eye with a warm cotton ball (lying on your back) for five minutes. You may repeat as needed (usually 3-5 times a day).
