Bringing your child into the wilderness may mean long exposure to the sun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Hang or erect a tarp to create a shaded play area at camp during hours of direct sunlight. Your child can play near you outdoors without risking sun damage.

  2. Step 2

Schedule activities in the sun for cooler parts of the day.

  3. Step 3

Consider buying a fun child-sized umbrella to carry when hiking if you must hike during hours of direct sunlight.

  4. Step 4

Use a pack with a sun visor if carrying a baby or toddler on your back. Check frequently to make sure the sun isn't hitting your child.

  5. Step 5

Dress the child in clothing woven tightly enough to block the rays of the sun but loosely enough to let sweat evaporate.

  6. Step 6

Have the child wear a hat with a brim that covers the face.

  7. Step 7

    Have the child wear sunglasses.

  8. Step 8

Apply waterproof sunscreen designed especially for children uniformly over all exposed areas of the child's body, avoiding the upper and lower eyelids.

  9. Step 9

Reapply sunscreen frequently, especially if the child is swimming.
