How to Add a Sound File to a Web Page

Add music or sounds to your web page using HTML. This tutorial covers .wav files only.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the page using a text editor, such as EditPad or Notepad. Position the cursor where the sound will appear.

  2. Step 2

    Type the following, replacing sound.wav with the name of your sound file: Sound.

  3. Step 3

    Replace 'Sound' with your own text, a graphic, or a button describing the sound.

  4. Step 4

    Save the page and open it in a web browser. Click on the link to test the sound.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload a sound file in binary format. Uploading the file in another format can cause corruption.
  • Download various sounds from the Internet by visiting sites that offer sounds and/or graphics.
  • If the sound doesn't work, make sure your speakers are on and configured correctly!
  • Some browsers aren't correctly configured for sounds. Wav files are the most common and most browsers support it.
