How to Chop Hop Jump on a Windsurf Board

The most basic windsurfing jump is accomplished by sheeting-in off a small wave or wake bump and lifting the board up with your legs.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Life Vests
  • Wet Suits
  • Windsurf Boards
  • Windsurf Rigs
  1. Step 1

Look at your board. Is it a wave-jumping board? No? Don't go to Step 2 until you're riding one; you could seriously munch your board and equipment doing this.

  2. Step 2

Watch the water ahead of you for a possible launching surface. A bump, a small wave or a boat wake will serve your purpose.

  3. Step 3

Unhook from your harness and crouch low, ready to jump.

  4. Step 4

Lift up your front leg and pull up with your front arm as your board hits the jumping surface.

  5. Step 5

Sheet-in and raise your rear foot as the tail leaves the chop.

  6. Step 6

Face the bottom of the board slightly windward to gain some wind-assisted altitude.

  7. Step 7

Level out by pulling your legs up to your chest.

  8. Step 8

Straighten your legs as you land, with your back leg coming down slightly before your front leg. Keep both legs bent just enough to absorb the impact.

Tips & Warnings
  • At first, you may feel very out of control during air time. Remain sheeted-in throughout the flight and take solace in the fact that you'll get used to it and gain control with time and practice.
  • Height and air time are directly related to the likelihood of injury or equipment damage. Start small and work your way gradually higher.
  • Fall windward whenever possible to avoid having your board land on you.
  • Always wear a life vest.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

on 11/22/2005 ive done this before and it works fine as long as you dont jump to close behind the boat because the churning water will cause you to spin out and this could hurt. or so says the scar on my eyebrow
