Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Life Vests
  • Wet Suits
  • Windsurf Boards
  • Windsurf Rigs

    Backside Aerial

  1. Step 1

Master your bottom turns and "off the lip" top turns (see related eHows) until you are very comfortable performing them. Also master the chop hop (See "Chop Hop Jump on a Windsurf Board").

  2. Step 2

Do a good, sharp, frontside bottom turn and angle up the wave with lots of speed toward a steep section.

  3. Step 3

Lift up with your front foot and pull up with your front hand as your nose reaches the lip of the wave.

  4. Step 4

Lift up your back leg as the board begins to rise into the air.

  5. Step 5

Lean onto your lower rail, while still keeping your weight above the board, to aim the nose of your board back down at the wave.

  6. Step 6

Push out with your back foot to turn your board backside.

  7. Step 7

Land tail first by extending your back leg as you begin to land.

  8. Step 8

Ride down the wave and get ready to bottom turn.

  9. Frontside Aerial

  10. Step 1

Master the chop hop and the "off the lip" top turns (see related eHows) before attempting aerials. Make sure you are very comfortable with wave-riding first.

  11. Step 2

Do a good, sharp, backside bottom turn and aim yourself with good speed toward a steep section of wave about to pitch out.

  12. Step 3

Press down on your inner rail as hard as possible just before you hit the lip and begin your turn.

  13. Step 4

Keep sheeted in and lift up with your forward foot as your board goes over the lip of the wave.

  14. Step 5

Lift your back foot as you enter the air and extend your front leg.

  15. Step 6

Extend your back leg and bend your forward leg at the high point of your aerial to help the board turn a 180 in the air back toward the face of the wave.

  16. Step 7

Lower your back foot to land the tail first.

  17. Step 8

Sheet out a little as you land to avoid spinning out.

Tips & Warnings
  • A frontside aerial is best learned on a cross-offshore wind to lean back against while in the air.
  • Start with less air and gradually increase the height of your jumps as your skill improves.
  • Always wear a life vest.
  • Injury and equipment damage is directly related to the height and hang-time of your aerial. Start small.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
