When windsurfing downwind on a shortboard, sink the tail and pivot the board 180 degrees for a quick jibe transition that loses little speed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Life Vests
  • Wet Suits
  • Windsurf Boards
  • Windsurf Rigs
  1. Step 1

When windsurfing downwind at an angle, reduce your speed before you start your turn.

  2. Step 2

Move your back hand down to the boom and put your rear foot behind and leeward (downwind) of its strap. These actions will increase your leverage during the turn.

  3. Step 3

Lift up on the boom and lean back hard to lift your windward (upwind) rail. The board will respond by snapping up and turning.

  4. Step 4

Stay low to counter the pull of the rig toward the clew. Let the board spin 180 degrees.

  5. Step 5

Pull the rig back to a riding position with both hands back of the boom as the board stabilizes from the turn.

  6. Step 6

Power up the sail to maintain your balance and continue sailing on your new heading.

Tips & Warnings
  • The tightness of the slam jibe depends on the commitment of the rider. The radius of the turn is directly proportional to the pressure applied to the tail and the lift on the boom.
  • You can slam jibe in almost any kind of weather.
  • Always wear a life vest when windsurfing.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
