Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

While windsurfing on a shortboard and angling toward the wind, get up to a good speed and check to see that it's safe to turn.

  2. Step 2

Carve your board into the wind, keeping your weight forward on the board to prevent the sail from sinking and slowing you down. Maintaining your speed is crucial.

  3. Step 3

Place your front hand on the mast and your front foot just in front of the mast-foot.

  4. Step 4

Hop or shuffle quickly around the front of the mast, positioning your former front foot over the center line of your new side.

  5. Step 5

Switch your hand to the other side of the boom as you make the transition.

  6. Step 6

Reposition your hands on the new boom.

  7. Step 7

Assume a wide stance on the board to keep your balance.

  8. Step 8

Sheet in quickly to keep up your board speed and avoid sinking as you sail at your new heading.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speed and agility are the keys to success on the shortboard tack. If you move slowly, your board will sink too much.
  • Practice your boom handling on the beach.
  • Always wear a life vest when windsurfing.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
