Here's a slick way to get back up on your board after a fall. You'll be sailing again in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Life Vests
  • Wet Suits
  • Windsurf Boards
  • Windsurf Rigs
  1. Step 1

Position your windsurf board in the water. The board should be perpendicular to the wind with the mast and rig on the leeward (downwind) side, the clew to aft (back).

  2. Step 2

Place your feet on opposite sides of the mast-foot, equally spaced.

  3. Step 3

Bend your knees to keep your center of gravity low and grab hold of the up-haul line with both hands.

  4. Step 4

Pull the up-haul line with both hands and lean against it to lift the mast and rig out of the water.

  5. Step 5

Grab the mast just below the boom with both hands. Your balance will be precarious at this point, so execute the rest of this move quickly.

  6. Step 6

Slide your back hand down the boom and "sheet in" by pulling the boom toward you and pointing the clew aft (back). You will begin sailing as soon as you do this. Lean against the wind to stabilize your balance.

  7. Step 7

Move your forward hand off the mast and onto a forward position on the boom.

  8. Step 8

Readjust your feet to their proper riding position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't make any sharp motions after you begin to raise the sail. Think smooth.
  • Standing on a smaller board may cause it to sink in the water. As long as your balance is stable, you should still be able to snap uphaul. As soon as you sheet in, quickly jump both of your feet back into riding position to prevent a nose-dive.
  • Always wear a life vest when windsurfing.
  • Beginners should learn only in mild conditions.
  • Windsurfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
