Do you want to figure out how fast you walk? With these simple steps, you can estimate your average walking speed, which will also help you figure out how far you walk.

From Quick Guide: Walking It Off
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Grab a calculator, a piece of paper, a pencil and a stopwatch.

  2. Step 2

Assume your stride is 3 feet long, the average stride a person takes.

  3. Step 3

Start your stopwatch, and count how many steps you take in 1 minute at the pace you normally walk.

  4. Step 4

Divide the number of steps you take in 1 minute by 30. For example, if you take 96 steps in 1 minute, you'll divide 96 by 30.

  5. Step 5

Write down the result. This is the estimate of your speed in miles per hour. In this example, 96 divided by 30 equals 3.2. That means you walk an average of 3.2 miles per hour.

  6. Step 6

Determine the distance you walk based on time. In this example, if you walk for a full hour, you will have walked 3.2 miles. Half an hour and you will have gone 1.6 miles. An hour and a half on foot would give you 4.8 miles.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is one of many ways to measure the distance of your walk. Pedometers are another way to measure the distance walked.

on 11/22/2005 In the city centre, walk around St. Stephen's Green exactly 3 times. You have covered one mile. How long did it take? Or do it again and count the number of steps you take? Or find a Walkman tune that matches your mile.

on 11/22/2005 Drive your car around the block 3 or 4 times till your odometer shows and exact increase of one mile. You can usually do this and come out right back at your house. With your wristwatch, start on the exact minute and time the route you drove out.
