Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing Machine
  1. Step 1

Search the Internet for information about sewing machines. Most sewing machine manufacturers have Web sites, and these sites can provide valuable information on available features and pricing.

  2. Step 2

Consider the type of sewing you normally do and the type of sewing you'd like to be able to do. Make a list of the sewing machine features you absolutely need and the features you'd like to have. Take this list with you when you shop for a sewing machine.

  3. Step 3

Visit fabric stores and sewing machine dealers to get an idea of the types of sewing machines available in your area and their price ranges. Ask about the capabilities of the models you examine. Remember, the more options, the higher the price.

  4. Step 4

Try out a variety of sewing machines. Every sewing machine dealer has floor models available to prospective buyers. Think of this as an opportunity to test-drive a sewing machine before you purchase it.

  5. Step 5

Consider buying a used or reconditioned sewing machine. Some of these machines have been very lightly used, and most come with a warranty from the dealer. This is a good option if you're buying your first sewing machine and aren't sure how often you'll really use it.

  6. Step 6

Consider the service available to you when purchasing a sewing machine. Is the dealer also an authorized maintenance/repair facility or will your machine have to be sent off-site for any needed service or repair? Does your sewing machine purchase come with free classes on using your machine?

Tips & Warnings
  • If you purchase a sewing machine through the Internet or a catalog, make sure there's a local authorized repair/maintenance facility for your sewing machine brand. Otherwise, you may have to ship your machine for servicing.

on 11/22/2005 Dealers usually list their store price and the manufacturer's suggested retail price. The purchase price often is negotiable. Shop around, and ask for a better price or what else the dealer will include, such as thread or specialty feet.
