You might have the best start of your career ' even win the race ' but if you fail to check in properly you may see a 'Did Not Compete' on the results sheet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Arrive at the course starting area early.
Step2
Allow the committee boat time to anchor and get situated.
Step3
Sail with your mainsail up and on starboard tack towards the transom of the committee boat.
Step4
Pass the transom of the committee boat and signal to them by waving and saying, 'Checking in.' If your sail number is not legible to them, yell it out clearly and ask them to repeat it.
Step5
Get out of the way so other boats can have room to check in after you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check in early so that you don't have to worry about it when your pre-start sequence begins and you should be thinking about racing.
  • Give the committee boat transom plenty of room so that a gust of wind or a swell cannot cause you to collide with them.
