Some people love Christmas so much that they never put away their prized decorations. For fragile collectibles, glass cases might be a good idea for keeping away dust.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Christmas Tree Ornaments
  • Glass Cases
  • Ornament Storage Boxes

Step1
Hang antique ornaments securely on high Christmas tree branches, away from pets and possible bumps.
Step2
Dust ornaments after removing them from the tree.
Step3
Wrap each one individually in tissue or newspaper.
Step4
Pack in sturdy boxes. You may want to use a special ornament box with individual compartments. Order from a specialty house.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inspect the condition of newly acquired vintage ornaments. If they are stained or heavily soiled, consult an expert or a reference book on the care of antiques before attempting to clean them. A good source is Judith Miller's "Care and Repair of Everyday Treasures," Reader's Digest Books, 1997.

on 11/22/2005 Here are three things to remember when storing antique glass ornaments.

Store the ornament in a spot where the temperature does not fluctuate greatly. Hot attics and cold damp basements are likely to cause the silvering and paint decoration to flake and disappear. Moisture from condensation causes this to occur. Even temperature and low moisture conditions are ideal.
If possible store with the top facing down. If condensation occurs, then the moisture will evaporate without causing spots.
Always use acid free materials to pad or wrap your ornaments.

on 11/22/2005 Use makeup brushes to remove dust and dirt from old ornaments. ALWAYS remove the ornament hooks before storing - they can scratch. NEVER wrap in newspaper - the ink can rub off on the ornaments!
