While the hook shot is difficult to defend, the jump hook is next to impossible. It leaves you free to concentrate on the shot instead of your opponent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Hold the ball with both hands.

  2. Step 2

Keep your body between the ball and your defender.

  3. Step 3

Use your body to keep your defender away from the ball.

  4. Step 4

Pivot away from the basket so that your shoulders are perpendicular to the basket.

  5. Step 5

Switch the ball to your shooting hand.

  6. Step 6

Hold the ball with your hand underneath the ball.

  7. Step 7

Jump off your pivot foot, which is the foot opposite of your shooting hand.

  8. Step 8

Extend your nonshooting elbow to create some space.

  9. Step 9

Raise your shooting elbow to the height of your shoulder.

  10. Step 10

Continue to raise your shooting hand slightly above your shoulder.

  11. Step 11

Flick your wrist to shoot the ball.

  12. Step 12

    Follow through the shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you release the ball quickly and from behind your head, your defender will never have a chance to block the shot.
  • The simple act of jumping, even a bit, creates more space to shoot the ball.
  • Start with a solid base. When you pivot away from the basket, hold the ball firmly, and position your feet shoulder width apart.
  • There's no need to jump high. All you need is a bit of elevation to get the shot off.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 6/2/2008 The foundation for being a dominant post player??? Yeah, if you want to be sick. The hook shot is the weakest shot in basketball. I am embarrassed for those who use it. It reminds me of the days when players like Cousy, Archibald, and other sick players couldn't dribble witht their left hands. Sick!!

on 8/1/2007 There is only one man in the history of dominant low-post scorers who did not utilize the hookshot, and that is Hakeem Olajuwon. EVERY OTHER DOMINANT POST PLAYER HAS DEVELOPED A STRONG HOOKSHOT.

If you are big and clunky, jump off of two feet for more control. If you are coordinated and graceful, jump off of one foot turning into the basket for more space between your shot and the defender.

on 12/23/2006 Your treatment of a JUMP-HOOK shot
in basketball is exactly, precisely, right! A 6 foot guy can shoot it over a 7 footer & they are not hard to pop in from 5 to 10 feet.
Notice that this shot is very rarely used in the NBA!?
Instead, big dudes in the Paint
sort of feel they gotta macho just
jump up and get hammered under the basket. Yeah they get free throws -but many big hand guys cannot make
65% of free throws, love or money.
Frankly, why NBA Coaches don't have their players jump-hook shooting shows to me they just aint
gonna think outside the box.

on 11/22/2005 To get that perfect hook shot, you use your dominant hand coming from the opposite side of the court. With total control of the ball in your hand, start at the waist line. From there; make sure your head is directly in the path of the rim. When taking the shot, the ball should be in your palm by the time it reaches the shoulder line. Then roll it to the center of the hand and by the time it reaches the top of the head (some people go over the head depending on the length of their arms), finger roll it directly off the head. Your instincts will tell you how much power you need.

on 11/22/2005 If you try it a couple of times with minimal success, you probably need to bend your arm more (in the air) to get more strength in the shot.
