For soft earth tones, you can't beat nature's colors.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Colanders
  • Roots
  • Buckets
  • Pocket Knives
  1. Step 1

Get your roots and bark when they hold the most sap: in winter and early spring.

  2. Step 2

Remove the bark from sticks and branches.

  3. Step 3

Peel the roots into narrow strips.

  4. Step 4

Soak the wood in water for 72 hours. Use just enough water to cover it. (It will float; that's OK.)

  5. Step 5

Strain the water from the wood and it's ready to use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't boil the bark or roots; you'll lose the strength of the color.
  • Be careful when handling a pocketknife.

on 11/22/2005 Collect the Sycamore bark when it is shed from the tree. It makes a wonderful reddish brown on wool.
