Use the around-the-wall shot as both a defensive and offensive strategy from the corners. Defensively, the shot gives you time to get into position. Offensively, it changes the tempo of a quick point as the ball winds its way off three walls.
Step2
Aim for a spot 10-12 feet high on the side wall nearest you and 3-5 feet from the front wall.
Step3
Point your feet toward the corner you're aiming for.
Step4
Start your backswing.
Step5
Keep the face of the racquet slightly open to increase accuracy when aiming for the side wall.
Step6
Hit the ball with moderate power using a smooth, controlled stroke and finishing your swing high.
Step7
The ball should bounce off the side wall then the front wall and the other side wall as it angles back to the corner you hit from, dropping from a point high on the side wall and bouncing just before hitting the back wall.
Tips & Warnings
If you hit the ball too hard, it's likely to bounce off the ceiling setting your opponent up with an easy shot.
The ball will return to the back court fairly slowly, so be prepared for an aggressive shot from your opponent.
Though it can be used for offense, the around-the-wall shot is better suited for defense.
Continue to use this shot until your opponent realizes it's not that difficult to return if she or he appears unfamiliar with this shot.
