How to Gain Clients as a Hairstylist

Be a cut above to gain new hairstyling clients.

The sound of a buzzing blow dryer may not be enough to compete among the nation's 349,420 hair stylists, as of a May 2010 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics survey. To stand out in the stylist crowd and attract a larger client base, you'll have to get as creative as your styles themselves. For some potential customers, altering their hair ranks as a huge lifestyle change, so appeal to their desire to look good and get to know both your clients and the cosmetology world of ever-changing appearances.

Keep up with the required licensing continuing education courses. While this may seem like time away from the salon or from recruiting new clients, staying aware of new trends and equipment may help you reach new audiences who are seeking those exact trends and techniques. Spending eight hours to learn balayage or heat-infused strand therapy means you can then advertise and offer it yourself.

Review other advertisements of salons in or out of your area. See which services seem to be the most commonly offered. If it's something you don't know or do, seek training in the area so you don't have to turn away clients. While not all hairstylists can perform every type of client request, being able to service the most inquiries opens you up to the biggest client base.

Offer referral perks. While giving a free trim, discount on a dye job, or extra shampoo may seem like a cut to your bottom line, dangling these bonuses in front of your current customers may have them sending their friends and family to you as well. Create cards with your name, salon address and a "referred by" line and distribute packs to your clientele. Ask them to refer new people to you, and when they do, you'll thank them with a special service or product.

Pay attention to what's going on in your community. If you live near a high school, start advertising prom specials a month or two before the event to get your calendar filled with clients. Offer themes such as girls' night out, wedding parties or bachelorette events. Even if a client comes once, in a group or for a special event, she may be back as a regular soon after.

Advertise your services on local aggregator sites such as Craigslist or offer coupon deals though sites such as LivingSocial and Groupon. A discount, two-for-one, or a freebie with a purchase may spur a new client who was on the fence about changing stylists to come through your doors.
