How to Drop an Image to GIMP

Learn to drag an image file onto the free image manipulation program GIMP so you can open these files in a way that's intuitive to you. Once you learn to drag one image onto GIMP, you can drag multiple image files to open them at the same time. Note that GIMP's application window doesn't have to be visible for you to drop image files onto it. Drag the files onto its taskbar icon to open them.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows Explorer, then navigate to a folder containing at least two images you'd like to drop onto GIMP's application window, for the purpose of opening the images.

    • 2

Use Windows' sizing or management commands to place Windows Explorer on the left or right half of your screen and the GIMP application window on the other half. If you're using Windows 7, for example, drag the title bar of Windows Explorer to the left edge of the screen and release, and drag GIMP's title bar to the right of the screen and release. If you are using Windows Vista, press and hold the "Ctrl" key, then click the taskbar icons for Windows Explorer and GIMP. Right click the taskbar and click "Tile vertically." This step enables you to see clearly the process of dragging image icons from Windows Explorer onto GIMP.

    • 3

Click the icon of an image file in Windows Explorer, then drag toward GIMP until your mouse pointer is hovering over a blank area in GIMP. Notice that the mouse cursor has changed to a "+" symbol, indicating that GIMP is ready to open the file you've dragged toward it.

    • 4

Release the mouse. GIMP will open the image file.

    • 5

Use the instructions from Step 2 through Step 4 to drag another picture onto GIMP. Notice that this second one appears on the same canvas as the first one. You can tell both pictures share the same canvas by looking at the "Layers" window, which shows thumbnail images of both pictures.
