How to Hang a Quilt Without a Sleeve

Hang a quilt from a wall using a drapery rod and clips.

Quilts made especially for display are often made with a hanging sleeve attached to the back. With this sleeve, a curtain rod is threaded through the back of the quilt for quick and simple display of the quilt on a wall or a specialty display area, such as those at a fairgrounds exhibition hall. Standard quilts, however, are usually not made with a hanging sleeve; attaching one as a modification is difficult as it can impact the quilting design on the front. You can still display your quilts in an attractive manner, though, using heavy-duty drapery rods and decorative hanging clips. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your quilt on a flat surface the way you want it displayed on the wall and measure its length and width. Purchase a heavy-duty drapery rod an appropriate size for the width of the quilt. Heavy-duty drapery rods come in a variety of finishes and decorative finishes; choose one appropriate for your décor and taste.

    • 2

Clip the heavy-duty drapery rod hanging hardware clips no further than 3 inches apart along the top edge of your quilt. Slip the hardware clips onto the drapery rod.

    • 3

Consider where you want to place the quilt on the wall. Use a ladder if necessary to make a mark on the wall where you want to place the rod. Hold the rod in place (or have a friend do so) and check to ensure the placement is satisfactory and that the quilt is hanging where you want it to. Adjust the placement if necessary; make a small "x" on the wall to mark the final area where you want the center of the rod to hang.

    • 4

Use the laser level to mark a straight line on the wall where you want it placed. Use the ladder to hold the curtain rod hanging hardware in place and make marks where the screws are to be installed. Remove the hardware and predrill holes in these marks.

    • 5

Install the hardware using the predrilled holes you made using the drill. Hang your drapery rod from the hanging hardware and use the level to ensure your rod is perfectly straight. Adjust if necessary.

    • 6

Stand back and assess your work to ensure the placement of your quilt and the placement of the individual clips across the top of the quilt look the way you want them to. Adjust if necessary and add more clips if the quilt seems to pull too much on the clips to more evenly distribute the weight.
