How to Become a Bail Bonds Bounty Hunter in North Carolina

Bounty hunting in North Carolina is illegal. However, you can become a bail bond runner in North Carolina. Bail bond runners assist licensed bail bondsmen by helping ensure that bonded defendants show up for scheduled court appearances. Duties include apprehending and securing fugitive defendants. As a bail bond runner, you may also execute bonds, provided your supervising bail bondsman issues you a power of attorney. Before you become a bail bond runner, you must meet licensing guidelines and pass the necessary examinations.

      Reside in North Carolina for at least six months, be 18 years of age with a high school diploma or general equivalency degree. You must also possess a North Carolina-issued driver's license. You must also be of sound moral character with no felony conviction or unpaid bond debts.

      Complete the three-day prelicensing bail training through the North Carolina Bail Agent Association. You can contact the association for scheduled class times or check the association's website. As of July 2011, the training cost was $500.

      Obtain a bond runner application from the North Carolina Department of Insurance website. You may also contact the Agent Services Division to obtain an application.

      Complete the application. Provide your name and contact information. Answer the background information honestly. North Carolina conducts thorough background searches on all applicants. Any discrepancies listed on your application may result in the denial of licensing. (See References 3)

      Ask your supervising bail bondsman employer to complete the "Power of Attorney Appointment of Bail Bond Runner" and the "Supervising Bail Certification and Attestation" section of the application. A notary must certify each section. (See References 3)

      Sign and date the application. Attach a passport size photograph of your face to the first page of the application. (See References 3)

      Complete the "Fingerprint/Criminal Background Packet" after the completion of the pre-licensing training class. Fill-in the "Electronic Fingerprint Submission Release of Information" and "Applicant Information" forms attached to the bail runner application. (See References 3)

      Take the forms to an authorized law enforcement officer. The officer will electronically submit the forms. Receive verification that the officer submitted fingerprint information electronically to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Attach verification to the application.       Wait for your qualification letter from the Department of Insurance. Schedule the state exam by phone, at a test center or online (pearsonvue.com). Pay the fee of $56.50, as of July 2011.
