How to Convert TZ Files

The TZ file extension is a type of file compression used by Unix machines. It is a combination of the Tarball archive and a zip compression. It can be uncompressed and compressed using a different type of file compression on any operating system. Though Window's default extractor cannot extract the Tarball compression, there are several free and open-source extraction and compression tools you can use on Windows to convert TZ files into other file types.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the TZ file you want to convert to another file type.

    • 2

Right-click the file, and hover over the file extraction program you want to use. 7Zip, GunZip, PeaZip and Universal Extractor are all examples of free options that run on Windows and allow you to extract and compress files in a variety of formats.

    • 3

Right-click the extracted file and hover over the file compression software you want to use. Many of the same programs can extract and compress files as well, but if you use GunZip to extract a file, use GZip to compress it. Click the option to compress the file. Select the file extension you want the converted file to have. Allow the file to compress.
