The Wrap Method for Casting on DPM
The wrap method for casting onto double-pointed needles, or DPNs, is useful for those who want to work in the round without a visible hole in the middle of their work. The wrap method is ideal for knitting toe-up socks or top-down hats. This cast on goes by different names, including the figure 8 cast on and the magic cast on. The technique involves wrapping the yarn around two of the four DPNs you will use to knit your project.
Instructions

1
Hold two DPNs together vertically and side by side. Catch the tail of the yarn between the two needles, at the bottom. Hold the tail in place with your thumb.
-
2
Pull the yarn to the back of the needles. Wrap it from left to right over the top of the left needle.
-
-
3
Pull the yarn back between the needles and wrap it from right to left over the top of the right needle.
-
4
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have cast on as many stitches as indicated in your pattern. You should have an equal number of stitches on both needles. For example, if your pattern says to cast on 20 stitches, you should have 10 wraps on each needle, with each pair of stitches making a figure 8 around the two needles. The last cast-on stitch should drape over the right needle and leave the working yarn running between the needles from front to back.
-
5
Pick up a third DPN and knit all the stitches on the left needle.
-
6
Flip the needles over so that the working yarn is on the right-hand side of the needle that was on the right. Knit these stitches through the back loop, pulling them tight as you go (they will be loose after you knit the stitches off the first needle).
-
7
Split the stitches between three needles and continue working in the round as usual.
