How to Start a Speech Properly
Whether you are giving your first speech for a class in school or making a presentation for your job, it is important for your speech to be constructed properly. This includes beginning your speech in the proper manner. While each situation has its own set of rules, the way in which you set up your speech is often the same. When you give a speech, you are representing yourself and, if applicable, your company and you should focus on giving a good first impression.

1
Thank the person who introduced you and give a brief introduction of yourself and your qualifications for the speech topic. Keep this portion as brief as possible.
-
2
Get straight to the point. You can open by telling a story, but make sure it is relevant to your topic. Avoid using pointless phrases, such as "I'm happy to be here" or "I'm excited about this opportunity."
-
-
3
Introduce your topic by presenting an interesting or startling fact to capture your audience's full attention.
-
4
Outline the basic points you will cover in your speech. You don't want to give away the entire speech, but it can help hold your audience's attention by letting them know what is coming.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your sentences brief and concise, but full of information. Dragging out your point will lose your audience.
Avoid opening with a joke, especially when you are speaking on a serious topic. Leave the humor to comedians.
Avoid drawing attention to your nervousness or quirks. If you don't tell them, chances are they won't notice.
