How to Make Hat Brims
Making your own hat can be a fun and economical way to accessorize an outfit or construct much-needed shade from the sun. After successfully creating the shape and size dome for your hat, adding a brim is the next step. Hats ranging from cowboy hats to sunbonnets all have a similar brim that can be constructed using one simple process.

1
Trace the bottom edge of the dome of your hat on the material for your brim.
-
2
Determine how wide you would like the brim of your hat to be and add 1/2-inch to that amount. For example, you may choose that you want your brim to be 4 inches wide, so you will measure 4-1/2-inches. Once the width is determined, use the measuring tape to mark the width every 3 to 4 inches around the shape you have already drawn on the material. Connect these markings so that you now have two circles drawn on the material.

3
Cut a slit in the center circle by pinching the material and making a snip with the scissors. Insert the scissors into the slit and cut along the first line you drew. Then cut along the line of the second circle you drew.
-
4
Fold over 1/4-inch along the outer circle and secure fold with straight pins. Sew along the folded crease and remove the pins.
-
5
Attach pin the inner circle of the brim to the bottom edge of the dome of the hat, overlapping 1/4-inch. Sew along the pins, removing each pin as you encounter it.
