How to Start & End a Friendship Bracelet

Friendship bracelets, ubiquitous on elementary school playgrounds, are made of embroidery floss. The traditional design is diagonal stripes of three colors, but there are many variations. When you first start making embroidery floss friendship bracelets, you will need to learn how to start and end them. Just as making the body of the bracelet requires tying knots, so does starting and finishing it. Braiding the finished end of a friendship bracelet will make it easier to tie around your friend's wrist.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold three 60-inch strands of embroidery floss together and fold them in the middle so that you have six 30-inch strands handing down from the fold.

    • 2

Tie all the strands together in an overhand knot approximately 1 inch below the fold. The loop above the knot will be the space through which you tie the finished ends.

    • 3

Stick a safety pin through the knot and pin it to your jeans or a pillow to secure the bracelet as you work.

    • 4

Finish a friendship bracelet by dividing the six strands into two groups of three.

    • 5

Braid each group of three strands until each braid is 3 to 4 inches long. Tie the base of each braid with an overhand knot and trim off any excess thread with scissors.
