How to Flip a Selection in GIMP

When working with an image in GIMP, flipping inverts a selection into a mirror image. An image can be flipped horizontally or vertically. This tool is useful for creating reflections or simply inverting a picture so its composition better fits your needs. You can select all or part of an image to flip, or you can flip just the selection marquee, which leaves the image intact.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open your image in GIMP.

    • 2

Click one of the selection tools, such as the shapes selector or the freehand lasso. Click and drag your mouse to make a selection.

    • 3

Hold the "Shift" key and press "F" to select the Flip Tool. By default, the Layer option is selected, which allows you to flip the image in the selection region. If you only wish to flip the selection marquee, click the "Selection" icon, located to the right of "Affect" in the Flip Tool's options.

    • 4

Click the selection area to flip it horizontally.

    • 5

Hold the "Ctrl" key and click the selection area to flip it vertically.
