How to Get a Magnet Train Ticket in "Crystal"
In "Pokemon Crystal" for the Gameboy Color, you can find the magnet train -- which travels at a speed of over 340 mph -- in both Johto and Kanto. It is not in operation by default because a member of Team Rocket stole a part from the power plant in Kanto. You must have a pass in order to board the train, which you get in Saffron City.

Go to Saffron City.

Speak to the mimic girl in one of the houses next to Silph Co. She will ask you to find her favorite poke doll.

Go back to Vermillion City and speak to the chubby guy standing under a doll in the house. He'll give you the doll.

Return to Saffron City and speak to the copycat girl once more. She'll take the doll and give you a magnet pass in exchange, allowing you to board the magnet train without needing to travel on Victory Road in between Johto and Kanto.
