How to Export SketchUp 3-D to Second Life

One entry into the 3-D modeling software arena is Google's SketchUp. It is available as both a free and a professional download, and it enables you to create professional-looking 3-D models with a minimum of training. Second Life is a free, online social network and game that allows its participants to create avatars of themselves and interact with others, as well as create 3-D models from within the game and add them to Second Life's world. It is possible to use Google's SketchUp to create and export a 3-D model, which can then be imported into your Second Life inventory.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Google's SketchUp on your computer at sketchup.google.com. Follow the onscreen instructions to install and start SketchUp.

    • 2

Create your 3-D model using SketchUp. Save your work.

    • 3

Export the 3-D model by selecting "Export" and "3-D Model" from the File menu. Save the model as a DAE file. Make a note of where you save the file.

    • 4

Start up Second Life and log in to your account.

    • 5

Open your inventory folder. Click the "Add (+)" menu button and select "Upload model." In the window that opens, navigate to the location of the DAE file you saved. Select the file and click "OK." The DAE will be imported as a mesh file object, enabling you to edit it and add it to your Second Life character inventory.
