How to Measure to Make a Dress
Consumers cannot always depend on size numbers when looking for a dress that fits well. Depending on the manufacturer, the sizes vary. Because of this, many women decide to make their own dresses so that they can be made to fit perfectly. When making a dress, there are four measurements that need to be taken: bust, waist, hips and hem. These measurements not only help when sewing a dress, but can also come in handy when purchasing a dress online.

1
Bring the measuring tape around the back and across the fullest part of the breasts. This is the bust measurement.
-
2
Measure around the smallest part of your waist (usually about 1 inch above the belly button), leaving enough room to slide two fingers underneath the measuring tape. This will be the waist measurement.

-
3
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of the hips. This is the hip measurement.
-
4
Measure from the waist to wherever you want the hem to fall. This is the hem measurement.
-
5
Write down all the measurements for reference when buying a pattern, drafting a pattern or cutting fabric.
