How to Use DMC Floss to Make Jewelry

Add colorful beads to your project.

DMC produces a variety of art supplies including embroidery floss -- a multi-stranded thread used for embellishing fabric with decorative stitches. Although thicker, floss is less tightly wound and proportionally weaker than normal sewing thread, so it is often used in lieu of more expensive materials when practicing unfamiliar braiding and knotting techniques. Crafters also use floss to make colorful pieces of costume jewelry such as friendship bracelets, which are inexpensive, machine-washable and easily crafted.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two or more 15-inch lengths of floss. Hold the ends together and tape the floss to a tabletop.

    • 2

Grip the end of the floss between your thumb and pointer finger.

    • 3

Twist the floss clockwise. Slide one half of the toggle clasp onto the loose ends of the floss. Push the clasp piece to the middle of the length of floss. Continue to turn the floss until it no longer turns. Hold the ends together in one hand.

    • 4

Grip the clasp while pushing the free end down on top of the taped end. Release the clasp and allow the floss to twist around itself.

    • 5

Smooth the twisted floss by running your fingers over the thread from the loose ends to the clasp.

    • 6

Pull the taped end up off the table.

    • 7

Twist and moisten the loose ends to create a fine point. Knot the second half of the clasp to the ends. Dab the ends with glue.

    • 8

Dry the bracelet overnight and trim the ends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add beads and charms to the bracelet by threading ornaments onto each strand of floss. Position ornaments while twisting the thread.
